Buildings and Spaces

Buildings & Spaces

Our buildings are open, but with reduced capacity in order to maintain safe and healthy social distancing. We take hourly headcounts in each library to ensure we are remaining within allowable capacity for our spaces. We include average hourly headcounts and quietest times for each library below. Use of library spaces is considerably lighter than during a typical academic year.

High-Risk Individuals

To reduce the amount of time you need to spend in the library, you can request items in our catalog. Look for the Request It link after you click on a title in the results list. We'll email you when they are ready to pick up. The hourly headcount averages below can give you a sense of quieter times.

For UNM students, staff, and faculty who are high risk, we offer a low-contact Carryout service. Please contact us through Ask a Librarian if you are interested in this service and we will follow up with you.

You can also set someone as your proxy who can borrow materials on your library account.

COVID Precautions

In order to protect all of us, we have made a number of changes to our spaces:

UNM Only

Library spaces are limited to the campus community (primarily) with a current Lobo Card and properly worn mask required to enter.

Social distancing

We’ve limited the amount of seating in our buildings to below 25% capacity and have removed the rest of the furniture to make sure everyone can remain at least 6 feet apart while seated. Head counts are made on an hourly basis to be sure we remain blow our target capacity.

    Capacity for each library is:
  • Zimmerman Library - 138 seats
  • Centennial Science and Engineering Library – 95 seats
  • Fine Arts & Design Library – 39 seats
  • Anderson Room – 4 seats for special collections access
Zimmerman’s basement level is now an employee only workspace, to reduce shared workspaces for our employees. Most of our other group spaces, from group study rooms to the Willard and Waters room, are closed.

Starbucks remains closed to further limit traffic in Zimmerman Library.

Physical Barriers

We’ve added plexiglass shields to all service desks in each library, as well as to the security guard stations. This keeps all of us safer while we interact.

We’re adhering to campus directives on mandatory face coverings: please wear a mask the entire time you are in the library. This means that no food or drink are allowed in the library.

Cleaning

We are frequently cleaning shared surfaces and equipment in the library. We wash our hands often, and encourage you to wash yours!

We’ve added extra hand sanitizer stations throughout each library.

We need your help!

Please remember to follow these key actions that will keep us all safe and able to keep our buildings open:

  • Physical distancing - We've spread out the furniture. Please don't move it around.
  • Properly worn mask or face covering
  • Practice proper handwashing
  • Stay home if you’re sick or you’ve been instructed to isolate/quarantine
Thank you!
